Abstract

This project constitutes a UK-wide strategic assessment of the policy and regulatory frameworks governing biomethane production and grid injection, with the objective of identifying how these frameworks can be updated to unlock growth. The review will examine the current policy landscape, support mechanisms and regulatory arrangements affecting biomethane development, including uncertainties associated with existing schemes and fragmented governance structures.

This project will generate new insights into international best practice and successful biomethane policy frameworks, enabling UK gas networks to better understand the mechanisms that have driven scale-up in other jurisdictions. By identifying transferable approaches and translating them into evidence-based propositions for regulatory reform, the project will support more informed policy engagement and help create the conditions required for sustainable biomethane growth in the UK.
