Decarbonising Transport with Vehicle Electrolyser

Abstract

Northern Gas Networks is exploring innovative solutions to decarbonize its operations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen fuel, produced via electrolysis, presents a promising alternative to conventional fuels for fleet vehicles. This project aims to assess the technical, operations and economic feasibility of integrating electrolyser systems into a range of Northern Gas vehicles.

The overall project outcome is that NGN and other stakeholders are sufficiently informed to determine whether electrolyser integration is advised based on the technical, operational, economic and environmental impact.

  • Real-world effectiveness of hydrogen-assisted combustion in reducing CO₂, NOx, and fuel consumption in utility fleet conditions
  • Impact of electrolysers on vehicle performance, payload constraints, and operational reliability
  • Viability of integrating the technology into non-depot-based fleets (e.g. take-home vans)
  • Evidence on whether fuel savings offset capital and maintenance costs (total cost of ownership insight)
  • Understanding of regulatory and safety considerations for hydrogen generation onboard vehicles
  • Insights into maintenance requirements and long-term durability of electrolysers in daily operations
  • Identification of use cases where this technology is most effective (e.g. vans vs generators vs plant equipment)
