High Pressure Venting and Flaring Demonstration for Net-Zero Gases Transportation

Abstract

National Gas Transmission (NGT) own and operate the UK’s National Transmission System (NTS), transporting natural gas from terminals to end users. NGT have ambitions to repurpose the existing to transport hydrogen and hydrogen blends. Understanding the impact of hydrogen on our existing assets is a key enabler for this.

This project will conduct design of flare for hydrogen and its blends and vent system for hydrogen, its blends and carbon dioxide and offline physical testing to provide evidence that hydrogen / hydrogen blends could be flared and vented safely and environmentally in for NTS.

The project will provide stakeholders with an understanding of the gaps in evidence and the work required to bridge these gaps in order to update National Gas Transmission policies and procedures for hydrogen. This is a key activity in allowing hydrogen to be transported in the NTS and for Project Union to become operational.

The learning will develop an understanding of changes required to gas networks to meet hydrogen safety and optimum operation, with hydrogen and hydrogen blends. The findings from the project will be uploaded to the ENA Smarter Networks portal and will be shared via NGT innovation social media.

As set out in the NIA governance, we will produce an annual Project Progress Report to provide a formal update on project progress against its aims, objectives and success criteria. In addition to this requirement, our detailed communications plan sets out a series of interactive sessions, which will report progress more frequently throughout the project, aligning to key milestones as the project transitions through build, test and trial at 2%, 5%, 20% and 100% hydrogen concentrations.

The venting and flaring demonstration will provide detailed results as to how removing gas in our key NTS assets such as pipelines, valves, regulators and metering and pigging equipment could be done with hydrogen and carbon dioxide and impacts on safety regulations, internal standards and exclusion zone of each NTS location. We will produce an NIA closure report for this test with the full detailed test report will be incorporated as part as part of the wider set of results for 2%, 20% and 100% hydrogen concentrations under safety case submission. This report will consider the implications of all gases tested on the operation of the NTS and also the requirements for further work in order to update the safety case and associated procedures.
