Hydrogen Combustion Engine Feasibility Study

Abstract

This project will see Cenex deliver a feasibility study on hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) as an alternative to diesel and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) within WWU’s operational fleet. This project comprises three distinct work packages (WPs), each feeding into a holistic assessment of H2ICE applicability across WWU’s vehicle assets. Cenex will apply its expertise in fleet decarbonisation, alternative fuel technologies, legislative policy analysis, and techno-economic modelling to meet WWU’s scope requirements. All outputs will be suitable for internal strategic review and for sharing externally with partners and stakeholders.

Limited work has been undertaken to investigate the feasibility of utilising H2ICEs for operational vehicle fleets, such as those used by GB Gas Distribution Networks (GDN). This project is innovative in that it will analyse the current status of H2ICE deployment worldwide and deliver a summary report relating these to UK commercial and passenger vehicle market sectors, whilst identifying potential opportunities where fleet strategy change could support hydrogen adoption. Furthermore, the summary report on current regulative and legislative barriers to UK adoption of H2ICE in road vehicles will provide GDNs with a likelihood and possible timescale for adoption of these vehicles into their operational fleets.
